Angelina Jolie...the filmmaker?

Wow didn't see this coming. She's at the top of her acting career and is already setting up a new one. Writing and Directing this film about the Balkan War is no mean feet. She's definitely testing herself.

Unfortunately by the look of this trailer, it isn't coming off too well. For me, probably one of the worst trailers of the year. But, this could be a gross misjudgment on my part, and maybe this wanna-be, deep meaningful drama will actually be a deep, meaningful drama.

Now I may be mocking too much, so feast your eyes on the new (fairly long) trailer below and give your thoughts on Jolie's new career move....

  1. one can only expect, judging by past performances and the inspiration that is angelina jolie on screen and off, that this will be a sensitive and sensual portrayal of humanity. alebit not one for the light hearted among us, it surely beats the void and intellectually regenerative film that is the fast and the furious or XXX.
I wonder what you think about Clint Eastwood's obvious influence on Angelina's direction? x

  2. ok, so iv answered the xxx and fast and furious thing in the other post, but just wanted to answer about angelina jolie specifically. Firstly, angelina jolie's as an inspiration to her films. I think she's good, but she's not that good. For me she's best in Eastwood's Changeling but it feels like all Eastwood (she did a similar role in a mighty heart and looked how that turned out). It is difficult to tell how far she is influenced by Eastwood at this stage but if she was, i would argue that it is not necessarily the best thing. Eastwood has his own way of filmmaking. And while he has had his successes with it (Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby), not even Eastwood can pull of his own heavy direction sometimes (flags of our fathers, invictus). So for her to go all eastwood, would not only be unoriginal but it is not even a sure winner.

My scepticism lies in the fact that she is ticking all the boxes (actors from the area, drama, war etc.) while the concept is nothing new (the barriers of society etc.). Picking the Balkan war is definitely going to be emotional but much like the Help recently, that doesn’t make it automatically a good film. Your right, though i will reserve judgement till it comes out. This just got me off to a bad start...
